RAK CeramicsRAK Ceramics’ 2013 CSR initiatives are being brought to a close with a UAE clean-up campaign, which took place this month. The activity, which was conducted in conjunction with the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), saw employees and senior managers of the world’s largest ceramics manufacturer volunteering to clean-up a section of UAE beach. The drive is part of a broader global campaign to support a clean, healthy and safe environment for all.

The clean-up campaign was RAK Ceramics’ last initiative in a busy 2013 CSR programme, with many activities having their employees’ welfare at heart. The organisation recently inaugurated a RAK Ceramics Football Stadium to support corporate sporting initiatives and to encourage employees to engage in healthy exercise. It also opened a children’s park adjacent to the employee accommodation, so that children of the employees can have somewhere to play. The combined area of the two facilities covers more than 5,000 sqm.

“RAK Ceramics CSR strategies for 2013 were focused on social, environment and economic aspects of the business. The recent UAE clean-up campaign targeted environmental aspects of our CSR commitment while providing facilities to our staff and their children is towards social betterment and improving employees well being.” said Abdulla Mahmood, General Manager of Marketing and Corporate Communications, RAK Ceramics. “We believe that activity and exercise is one of the key ingredients for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, both for children and adults,” he said.

From economic aspect, RAK Ceramics exports to 85% of the production to overseas markets that play a role in import and export balance of the UAE. Further, employing over 7,000 employees across 12 plants and multiple administrative offices in Ras Al Khaimah involves accommodation, transportation, food, healthcare and recreational facilities that contribute to the Emirate’s GDP.

Other notable CSR activities from RAK Ceramics in 2013 included an occupational health drive and an animal welfare initiative. The health drive took the form of an anti-obesity programme that was run in conjunction with VLCC Beauty and Slimming Centre, where RAK Ceramics employees were offered free consultations, medical check-ups and presentations on how to live healthily. The animal welfare initiative involved RAK Ceramics partnering with RAK Animal Welfare Centre to sponsor a calendar that highlighted the role of the institution. One hundred and fifty calendars were given to school children for free and a further 500 sold to the public, with all proceeds being donated towards providing shelter, care and medication to abandoned and stray animals.

On the November 27th, company hosted an educational tour for a group of 140 students from FIIB University, India, which included a corporate presentation and a visit to the showroom and factory to show the organisation’s advanced production and manufacturing facilities. More recently, it launched a fundraising drive for Typhoon Haiyan victims, which saw RAK Ceramics’ employees raising funds and providing cash donations to assist those in the Philippines whose lives have been devastated by the cyclone.
