IDSA Executive Director Visit Savannah College of Art And Design

IDSAIDSA Executive Director Daniel Martinage, CAE continued his tour of college campuses with a two-day visit in November to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where he met with students, sat in on classes taught by John McCabe  and observed a portfolio review.

The Georgia trip followed sojourns to Kendall College of Art and Design earlier this fall where Martinage chatted with students and designers from Western Michigan, and the Rochester Institute of Technology(RIT) where he attended and spoke at RIT’s Thought at Work conference.

Each visit was part of an ongoing initiative where IDSA leaders are meeting with students on their turf to get direct input from the Society’s newest members on how IDSA can continue iterating in the near-term future. “IDSA’s leadership wants to engage students early on and find ways to contribute meaningfully to the development of their careers,” Martinage noted.

A few key questions emerged from the discussions in Savannah, including:
•    How is IDSA responding to the relationship between ID and interaction design? And other fields?
•    In regard to advocacy, how is IDSA evolving in order to better align with emerging professionals?
•    How do we financially empower students involved with IDSA?
•    How do we elevate those students active in IDSA to continue to grow and expand the community?
•    Where does the corporate mandate start and personal creativity begin?

According to Martinage, those questions—and others he’ll gather during his tour of ID programs around the United States—will inform work being done during the next two quarters (and beyond) by IDSA’s Board of Directors, local volunteer leaders and staff.

“The future of IDSA rests on how well we service our chapters and students,” he offered. “For students, we can be a resource for professional and business development beyond the ID curriculum.”

Early in 2014, Martinage will work with Kendall College to conduct and record a training video for student leaders.  He’ll also be seeking out opportunities to engage with student members at the District Design Conferences. Additionally, more campus visits are in the works.
