hi-macs_blackBaars & Bloemhoff – distributor of HI-MACS in The Netherlands, is returning to Dutch Design Week for the second year with their exhibition Transitions II. Six promising designers have been invited to imagine and shape materials in Transitions II. The results will be on show in Broeinest at Strijp-S during the Dutch Design Week.

Sabine Marcelis, one of the most promising Dutch designers of the moment, who has been invited to take part on the event, has chosen HI-MACS for her new collection of lamps ‘FILTER’.

She says, “During my visit to the materials library of Baars & Bloemhoff I was quickly prompted to start working with their solid surface material HI-MACS. This natural acrylic stone comprises a huge diversity of decors and colour collections that vary in visual density, composition and layering. In my work I often experiment with the manipulation of a light source and I continued this key theme for FILTER. I started by playing with the material, varying it in thickness and texture, for instance, and then started illuminating it.”

To this end, she combined HI-MACS with moulded resin in various colours. Patterns and colours in the core of the material that are hidden when the light source is switched off then come alive and literally come to light in FILTER when the source is switched on. The lamp collection features the following HI-MACS® colours: Star Queen, Opal, Gemini and Arctic Granite. FILTER consists of a series of lamps that play with the filtering of light.

BLACK – by studio rENs

Working from its base in Eindhoven, Studio rENs is absolutely fascinated by material, form and colour, and how these three factors interact during a process of design. For Transitions II, designers Renee Mennen and Stefanie van Keijsteren took on the colour black.

BLACK is designed as a large modular set of ‘building blocks’ that centres around the colour black. The ultimate objects can be combined with each other at will, thus allowing movement between material and form.

The studio says, “BLACK turned out to be a pleasant surprise. We made a pre-selection from the huge range of black materials in the Baars & Bloemhoff product range, among which is HI-MACS® in the shades Black and Black Pearl, and noticed that the nuances in black, and the accompanying surface structures, result in a very subtle but wonderful contrast, which lets you experience the colour and materials afresh.”
