logo-firaDr. Asli Tamer Vestlund, Research and Consultancy Manager for FIRA International, will be presenting two seminars as part of Clerkenwell Design Week which takes place between the May 20 and 22.

The first seminar will give an overview of the sustainability criteria that designers, manufacturers and specifiers need to consider when working with furniture products. It takes place at the showrooms of Scandinavian Business Seating on 20th May, between 11am and 12pm.
The second seminar will discuss the importance of sustainability in the manufacturing of furniture products with a special focus on industry schemes, such as the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP). It will be hosted by Edge Design at the Assman Showroom on the 21st May, between 12pm and 1pm.

Entering its 5th year in 2014, the award-winning Clerkenwell Design Week has firmly established itself as the UK’s leading independent design festival and annually attracts the international design community to this small area of London for three days of exciting events.

Asli explains why the topic is of growing importance to the industry: “The rising concern about the effect of human practices on the environment has led to the growth of sustainability standards and regulations. As a result, businesses are increasingly asked to demonstrate how they are committed to sustainability.

“In this respect, it is important for designers, manufacturers and specifiers to ensure that sustainability criteria are at the forefront when working with furniture products. Preference should also be given to those suppliers that are embracing the wider principles of sustainable development, including their social impact and Health and Safety management. This is a great opportunity to find out more about the rapid move towards sustainability and how it affects all points of the furniture supply chain, as well as how it can help you reduce and save costs in the longer term.”

The seminars will explain and discuss the importance of various furniture sustainability criteria and schemes – including EU Timber Regulations, environmental management systems, Carbon Footprinting, Ecolabels, Environmental Product Declarations, BREEAM/LEED Schemes and SKA Ratings.

In her role at FIRA, Dr. Asli Tamer Vestlund manages various projects, leading the FIRA environmental offer, including Club Green, Carbon Footprinting and Chain of Custody consultancy, as well as being a leading force behind the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP).
