Responding to the RBS announcement of the closure off 44 branches, Chief Executive of the Forum of Private Business, Phil Orford MBE said,
“Successive governments have been concerned about the closure of bank branches yet despite recommendations from a number of sources, including the Treasury Select Committee and the Forum of Private Business, to explore the concept of shared bank branches, we have seen little action in this area.
“As a state-owned bank commits to getting rid of 44 branches today, including 14 it previously pledged not to get rid of, Government has an obligation to look again at this proposal. Access to finance isn’t just about banks being willing to lend, it’s also about being able to speak to branch managers directly.”
