The Tongue Chair by Arne Jacobsen Re-found

Published on : Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Tongue_fabrics_landThe Tongue chair by Arne Jacobsen has been given a new lease on life by Danish manufacturer HOWE. The chair is exclusive to Heal’s in the UK until June 2014.

Originally created for the Munkegård School in Demark in 1955, the Tongue was Jacobsen’s second completed chair design and regarded as one of his personal favourites. The chair was later seen at the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where it was also modified for use as a bar stool. Popular in Scandinavia, the design wasn’t available to the international market until the Eighties, and even then only retailed for a short period of time.

Now reissued by manufacturers HOWE, using Jacobsen’s original specifications, the Tongue maintains its classic aesthetics. To make it more durable for modern everyday use, the chair has been re-engineered using high-strength steel for the base.
