molo Unveils New Design at ICFF 2014

Published on : Thursday, May 29, 2014

moloICFF finished on Tuesday with molo receiving accolades for continued commitment to flexible design, sustainability, and innovation. Those discovering molo’s designs for the first time joined those who have championed the designs for many years, to enjoy the immersive and playful space Stephanie Forsythe + Todd MacAllen created for the international design fair in New York.
The installation was built entirely from molo’s soft collection of textile and paper partitions, paper seating, and energy efficient lighting. Eye-catching 10′ (3m) tall white softwalls, illuminated with LED, framed either end of the installation to create an open space where visitors could walk in and out of various intimate rooms.

The rooms showed examples of how molo’s products – softwall, softseating, and cloud softlight, etc. – can be integrated together or used individually to create meeting rooms, divide interior space, and create flexible seating arrangements. The acoustic absorption of softwall gave the semi-enclosed rooms aural separation from the rest of the hall.
Inhabitat named molo’s new benchwall as one of the shows’ best green designs. The seating, pairing a flexible bench with a 6′ tall backrest, is made from a high quality blend of 50% post-consumer recycled paper fibres and 50% new long fibres. The robust paper gives the seat impressive acoustic properties and strength, allowing users to lean into the supple pleats of paper, which contour to provide back support.

Last year molo’s cloud floor + table softlight were also selected as one of the best new green designs. benchwall was given a proper premier in front of a crowd during ICFF Talks on Day 2. The talk given by molo co-founder/lead designer Stephanie Forsythe gave an overview of the new benchwall design and detailed the research and development of the soft collection by Forsythe + MacAllen.

An elegant paper shelving enclosure made with molo’s new thinwall was found at the core of the installation, showing the design can function not only as a partition, but also a flexible door. The closet space could be easily hidden by magnetically connecting the two thinwalls together, and then be simply opened via natural felt handles attached to the walls.

Overhead, cloud softlight mobile was a favourite of many visitors to molo’s installation, including Apartment Therapy. The buoyant honeycomb cloud shades balanced in groups of three from curved aluminum armatures above molo’s installation, creating an undulating canopy of light that guided visitors from one area to the next. Another pick for sustainability, cloud is illuminated with energy efficient LED.

From ICFF, molo now moves towards Chicago for a new unique installation at NeoCon. The installation will play host to continued celebration of molo’s 10th Anniversary and offer another preview of molo’s new benchwall + thinwall modular system. NeoCon runs from June 9 -11.
