Ian Chapman to Speak At Furniture Industry Event

Published on : Monday, October 21, 2013

ChapmanOn November 5, Ian Chapman, Director of the National BIM Library at the National Building Specification (NBS), will present on the Building Information Modelling Project, known as BIM, a Government-backed initiative set to impact on the contract furniture and kitchen sectors.

The organisation of the event has been prompted by a Government announcement that by 2016 all public sector projects over £5 million will have to use BIM. Hosted jointly by the Furniture Industry Research Association and the British Contract Furnishings Association, the event aims to provide representatives from the furniture industry with a better understanding of the initiative and the preparation required for its implementation.

Phil Reynolds, Chief Operating Officer for FIRA International, said: “Ian’s work within the NBS exemplifies the collaborative working methods required by the industry at large. We are really pleased that he is able to take the time to explain BIM in more detail to help the furniture industry understand the implications it will have on the contract market, including office, educational and fitted furniture, such as kitchens.

“Following Ian’s presentation there will be an opportunity to ask questions and hold a discussion on the potential impact. We want the furniture industry to be well-prepared for the implementation of this major project, so I recommend that anyone that is likely to be affected by BIM comes along to the event. Please book your place in advance, as only limited spaces are available.”

A Chartered Engineer, Ian has been with the NBS since 2003 and has gained a wealth experienced in content strategy, management, information modelling and delivery. As Director of the BIM Library he works internationally with buildingSMART to develop the future technologies and information that will form the next generation BIM tools.

BIM involves the sharing of information to create a central resource, bringing together all of the different aspects of construction. A three dimensional model containing architectural, structural and engineering data is created from the combined information and used to assist decision-making during a construction project.

Established sixty four years ago, the Furniture Industry Research Association was set by the industry for the industry. It provides invaluable technical support to the entire furniture supply chain and funds projects for the benefit of the industry.
