VITRA at Milan Design week

At the 2015 Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Vitra launches Belleville, a new family of chairs and tables, and new versions of the Mariposa Sofa, the Polder Sofa and the Eames Plastic Chairs.

The stand is designed by Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, Tokyo. As an internationally renowned architect and designer, he specializes in creating retail environments. The warehouse character of the Vitra stand will highlight the temporary character of a fair.

The Belleville Chair is a technically sophisticated plastic chair consisting of two components – a structural frame and a seat shell. Tracing the calligraphic lines of the legs and back, the slender black frame supports a thin shell that tapers from the wide seat surface into a narrow backrest.

This type of construction opens up new perspectives for the materiality of the plastic chair, since the surface of the seat shell is the defining characteristic of the Belleville Chair’s identity: available in coloured polypropylene, moulded plywood veneer or with a cover in leather or fabric, the perception of the Belleville Chair is transformed from a plastic chair to a wooden chair to an upholstered chair – and even to an armchair with forward slanting armrests.

The large seat cushions of the new Polder Sofa and Polder Compact form a comfortable, asymmetrical seating surface that is flanked on both sides by the upholstered body – either an armrest and a platform or two armrests of varying heights.

Both sofas can be optionally configured with the higher armrest on the left or right side, and since the platform is separately available, it can also serve as an ottoman. The upholstered cushions and body of the sofas are covered with fabrics in coordinated hues and weaves: shades of green, red, golden yellow or night blue.

The new Mariposa sofas offer solutions for a wide range of requirements in regard to size and spatial planning: the Mariposa Love Seat provides spacious seating for one person or – as the name suggests – a cosy spot for two love birds. The Mariposa 2-Seater is an ideal choice for small, urban apartments where it offers full comfort despite its compact dimensions.

These two models come with one continuous seat cushion – in contrast to the larger 2 ½-seater and 3-seater versions of Mariposa: fitted with two seat cushions, these sofas invite users to stretch out lengthwise and use the adjustable armrests as a back or neck rest – for instance, as a relaxing place to read or take a nap. The range of sofas is complemented by round ottomans in three different sizes.
