Vincenzo-De-Cotiis-7Vincenzo De Cotiis is one of the best Italian designers and architects of the modern era, he is especially extraordinary because he utilizes recycled, reclaimed, reconstructed and re-worked elements in all of his craft. His method is crude and natural, modern and brutalist, all at the same time. A prime representation of this is the private luxury holiday residence, Vincenzo De Cotiis designed out of a memorable boathouse in Forte dei Marmi in the province of Lucca in northern Tuscany. This is an ancient fishing port and marble-warehouse city where actors and Europe’s social elite have now stayed and holidayed for decades.

Regarding the past of the region, and of the stone house itself, Vincenzo De Cotiis has chosen and custom-created pieces in marble, concrete, brass, fiberglass and lacquered wood, some with sources to the marine history.

In one corner with a generous skylight in the magnificent salon, De Cotiis located a large green suspended light fixture, designed by him. It matches with the green plants inside, the green drapery and with the lavish landscape outside. Underneath the light fixture, he conceives a quiet space for relaxation with a vintage bench, covered in white velvet, a marble console and a side table that is a mooring station.

In the contemporary dining room, the Vincenzo De Cotiis -designed table is surrounded by lacquered chairs from the 1950s, a 1970s stool, and vintage backyard fittings. The concrete walls are covered with recycled fiberglass panels.

In the luxury bathrooms, green marble pieces rest on foundations of cast brass which easily erases all evidence to a traditional bathroom and rather evoke a dressing room or even a room or hall, except with a sink. In the Art Deco-inspired kitchen, storage cabinets are composed of recycled fiberglass and provided with brass handles. African wooden cases and ancient ceramics adorn the cabinets.

Vincenzo-De-Cotiis- 2The chambers are all on the first floor and they have their private, peaceful, ambiance. Warm timbers and brass summon the nautical history.

The grand hall is a great example of how Vincenzo De Cotiis conserved the reddish-hued patina of the well-known brick walls. He designed a lacquered sofa base in bright red wrapped with tan suede seats.
