TON split lounge armchairPart of TON’s unique Split Collection, the Lounge Armchair designed by Arik Levy, has won the prestigious Red Dot Title 2016 in furniture design category.

Founded in 1954, the Red Dot Award is one of the world’s most important design prizes. The jury of 40 international experts examined a record 5,214 products this year, and they were impressed by the Split Collection and its lounge armchair.

TON had unveiled the Split Lounge Armchair at last year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan. The subtle lounge armchair has a higher backrest and comfortable, ergonomic seats. Apart from the detail of the split wood itself, also interesting is the detail in the seam on top surface of the backrest and armrests, which is decorated with a special trim. Beech or ash is used as a material for the production of its construction. The upholstery can be chosen from a wide spectrum of colours and materials.

The Split Collection is fully inspired by the traditional manual wood-bending production methods used in Bystřice pod Hostýnem ever since 1861. Designer Arik Levy said, “Split was born from the concept of bending; but not in a way that makes things ordinary, but rather gives it a new shape. The wood is divided into two parts, each bent in a different direction.”

The collection is the first in the world to use hand-bent cleft solid wood as a design, as well as fully functional, element. Apart from the lounge chair, the set includes chairs, barstools offered in two height variants and an armchair.
