Artek furnitureAn installation of the iconic Stool 60 was unveiled, a collaboration between renowned Finnish design company Artek and New York’s Dover Street Market. The installation debuted on June 24 to mark the 80th anniversary of the stool’s design by Alvar Aalto in 1933. A similar work titled “Elephant in the Grass” was featured at Dover Street Market Ginza last year to officially mark the 80th year. The installation is shown exclusively at Dover Street Market, where the stool is available for sale in limited quantities.

Both installations were designed by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture, who kept the focus on the design of the stool while playing with height and leg length. “We wanted to make the legs longer so the stool could be used as a side table, a stand for a reading stand or a projector stand—and on the tallest you can place one of the small shrines found in most Japanese offices and homes,” they said. They also sited blades of grass as an inspiration behind the varied leg lengths of the stools used in the installation, saying they wanted the legs to create the illusion of blades of grass, emphasizing it’s lightness in a blend of art and design.

Artek’s Stool 60 represents a landmark development in product design. In the early 1930s Alvar Aalto was a significant champion of socially oriented design and standardized construction. Utilizing the new wood-bending methods developed by Otto Korhonen at the time, Aalto designed a stool which is extremely simplistic in it’s design and focused on functionality. This light-weight stackable stool is made from extremely high quality Finnish birch and embraces the unique characteristics representative of Aalto’s broader style.
