The Good Design Award Presented to The Mars Light

Web496_weberrend_OCRThe Mars range, designed for Kera Interior by Tapio Anttila (SIO), has been recognised with the international Good Design 2013 award.

The inspiration for the Mars range of lights came from the design language and science fiction films of the 1950s and ’60s, reflecting the fascination with space travel that was characteristic of that era. The lampshade is formed of two closed cup-shaped elements crafted from transparent white thermoformed acrylic. The slight hollow at the centre of each is an aesthetic touch that also fills the practical function of allowing the parts to be fixed together firmly. In addition to creating a shape resembling a classic spaceship, the design allows for use of energy-saving fluorescent ring tubes. The lamp produces good, even light. The Mars range includes a pendant light and floor lamp that come with identical shades 57 cm in diameter. The pendant light is hung from the ceiling by an adjustable cord. The floor lamp has removable legs that can be attached and removed without tools. Tapio Anttila has earned five Good Design awards, and this is his second award for a project with Kera Interior.

Kera Interior offers a wide range of products, from timeless classics to new designs that are the classics of the future. Kera Interior’s new lights and lamps, including the award-winning Mars light, will be on display at Kera Interior’s stand at the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair on 4–8 February. The new Mars range is also featured at furniture company Pedro’s stand at the IIM furniture fair in Cologne on 13–19 January.
