The Furniture Makers’ Company fourth annual £500 prize for the best designed piece of furniture has been won this year by Young & Norgate for its Animate writing table, made in English Fenland bog oak, English oak and leather from the UK’s last bark tannery.
The desk was chosen for its superb craftsmanship, interesting choice and use of timber, and details such as the side-hung drawers and sliding desk tidy.
Judges Alan Tilbury, Mark Gabbertas and Marc Fish were unanimous in their decision but also highly recommended two further pieces.
Summerfields by Kevin Stamper is a wall hanging mirror framed with stained sycamore, a pixelated version of an English field in summer.
