Furniture Industry Meet At 2014 United Guilds Service

Published on : Saturday, April 5, 2014

2014 UGS 002It was the occasion of the 72nd United Guilds Service where all the Guilds and Livery Companies of the City meet in the magnificent setting of St. Paul’s Cathedral for a service, first celebrated in 1943 to lift the spirits of the City following the Blitz of the Second World War. It continues now to provide an uplifting experience for all attending, including the Masters, Prime Wardens and Upper Bailiff of the City Livery Companies in the presence of the Lord Mayor, Sheriffs, Aldermen and Officers of the City Corporation all splendidly attired in full ceremonial dress.
The sermon, preached by the Dean of St Paul’s playing a home fixture, drew on the Book of Samuel to examine leadership and amusingly informed the congregation that fine robes and seniority did not necessarily define leaders as he picked on a surprised couple in the congregation celebrating their  Golden Wedding anniversary.

Following the service Furniture Makers and their guests returned to Furniture Makers’ Hall where they enjoyed an excellent and convivial lunch.

The Master, reflecting on his year drawing to a close, was proud to highlight the City’s perception of us as a ground-breaking Company with a host of innovative projects serving the industry we represent.
Cliff Rust, the senior Past Master present, in his response echoed the thoughts of all present that the United Guilds Service provides the platform for one of the Company’s most enjoyable days of spectacle and fellowship.
