Forum of Private Business Responds To The Low Pay Commission’s Recommendations On Increases To The National Minimum Wage

Forum of Private BusinessCommenting on the Low Pay Commission’s recommendation to raise the National Minimum Wage by 3% to £6.50, Phil Orford MBE, Chief Executive of the Forum of Private Business said, “The Low Pay Commission has recommended an increase in the National Minimum Wage of 19p, or 3%.

“With small businesses struggling with a number of costs at present we are disappointed that the recommendation is higher than inflation, but are relieved it falls short of the much higher increases that have been called for.

“It is now up to the government to implement the recommendation of the independent commission, rather than seek to put in place a higher rise. At a time when energy costs are rapidly rising, business rates are set to overtake council tax in Treasury income and many small firms are due to enter auto-enrolment in the next couple of years, wage increases must be put in a wider context.”
